Annual SKMC Women in Medicine and Science Professional Development Program In-Person

Session 1: Graceful Self Promotion​: How to Support Your Own Career Success 

Time: 2:15 pm – 3:45 pm 

At the end of this session, participants should be able to: 

  1. Speak with self-assurance and confidence that will inspire others.  ​ 

  1. Share information about an accomplishment that impresses others with your capabilities and impact. 

  1. Identify and overcome potential barriers related to diversity, equity and inclusion​. 

  1. Demonstrate your leadership “presence” in planned and spontaneous interactions with others.  

  1. Hone your professional communication skills. 

Empowering Excellence: The Art of Being an Effective Sponsor and Sponsee  

Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm 
 

At the end of this session, participants should be able to: 

  1. Define the role of sponsorship in career success. 

  1. Learn to distinguish between sponsorship, mentorship and allyship. 

  1. Explore best practices of an effective sponsor. 
     

*Kheyandra D. Lewis, MD, MEd, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine and the Vice Chair of Faculty and Professional Development at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children where she oversees the development and support of programs designed to assist faculty in achieving their professional goals and advance the institution's mission. Additionally, as an Associate Program Director for the pediatric residency at St. Christopher’s, she directs the professional development curriculum and co-chairs the Mid-Atlantic region of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors.  

Clinically, Dr. Lewis is a pediatric hospitalist and has been a national leader in collaboration with the I-PASS Study Team by enhancing patient safety through establishment of a standardized handoff program and providing education on best practices for engaging families as part of the interprofessional team during rounds. Her scholarly pursuits encompass a dedicated focus on medical education, feedback mechanisms, effective communication strategies, professional development initiatives, and the promotion of health equity. 

**Nancy Spector, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics and serves at Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) as Executive Director of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM) program, a year-long, national leadership fellowship program for women in academic medicine, dentistry, public health, and pharmacy and as Executive Director of the Executive Leadership in Health Care (ELH) program for women leaders in health care systems. She also serves as Senior Vice Dean for Faculty, the Betty A. Cohen Chair in Women’s Health, Executive Director of the Lynn Yeakel Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership (IWHL), Chair of the I-PASS Study Group, and founder of the I-PASS Patient Safety Institute. 

Dr. Spector is a national leader in gender equity in academic medicine.  Her contributions to academic medicine and graduate medical education are in mentoring and sponsorship, leadership skills development, professional development, patient safety and curriculum development and implementation.  

She is the recipient of numerous national awards including the 2023 Elizabeth Blackwell Medal, granted by the American Medical Women’s Association to a woman physician who has made the most outstanding contributions to the cause of women in the field of medicine. Dr. Spector is a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and a member of the Advisory Leadership Council of Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation.
