A Good First Impression: The Learner-Centered Syllabus In-Person / Online

Facilitator: Jacob Santos, MA

The syllabus is a staple document synonymous with college courses across the world. This is likely the first text students see when they enter your course, and it is an essential one for them to successfully navigate your course and their learning. For the students, this document will help set the tone for the course and inform them about you as a professor. In this workshop, we’ll work on ways to make your syllabus more inviting, ensure it shows what is expected of students in the course, and is a good representation of who you are as an instructor.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Compare & Contrast a contract style syllabus and learner-centered syllabus identifying 2-3 major differences between them in small group discussions.
  2. Implement learner-centered syllabus language & themes into course syllabi for upcoming courses by making edits to an existing syllabus.
  3. Generate leaner-centered syllabus concepts relating to instructor information, course descriptions and policies through guided discussion and practice exercises.
