Are we even speaking the same language? grammatical structures in biology and other technical languages Online
Instructor: Thomas Twardowski, PhD
Scientists in Biology and other disciplines use grammar elements, tools for construing meaning, in real systems. Learning to recognize, develop, and teach with these tools can accelerate capability in learning from context, problem solving, and correctly expressing meaning. This workshop will present some participatory examples of scientific grammar construction tools. These examples will focus on biology but will include examples from chemistry and physics. Participants will explore a grammatical tool to apply in their classroom or clinical analysis. Participants will leave with suggestions on developing a training and assessment assignment for their tool.
At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
-
Identify specific elements for constructing and delivering meaning in the foundational language of their discipline
-
Recognize in particular image-symbolic techniques for construing meaning
