“So You’ve Got a Large and Busy Faculty”: Using a Limited-Series Weekly Newsletter to Provide Faculty Development on UME Topics Online

Instructors: Jennifer Valentine, MD, Dianna Cheney-Peters, MD, Lim Wong, MD, Jillian Zavodnick, MD

Delivering effective, engaging, and time-efficient faculty development is a persistent challenge—particularly in large departments where faculty members are pressed for time and dispersed across a variety of educational roles. To address this, the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) team in the Department of Medicine piloted a creative, low-barrier solution: a limited-series email newsletter titled “So You’ve Got a Student.”

This workshop will share how the newsletter was developed in direct response to faculty-identified needs, curated with input from UME educators, and designed for quick, practical consumption. Participants will learn about the design principles behind the series, examples of content themes, faculty engagement strategies, and lessons learned in scaling micro-learning for busy educators. Attendees will leave with adaptable ideas for implementing their own targeted faculty development efforts using minimal time and resources.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify specific faculty development topics that are important to share with a large faculty with various roles.

  1. Create a limited series newsletter that addresses topics in an engaging, low-stress way.

  1. Analyze the number of faculty who are opening the newsletter to assess engagement.
