The First Day of Class: It Only Happens Once In-Person / Online

The first day of class is a unique opportunity that will set the tone for the course which you will lead over the course of the semester. Your learners will be entering the space filled with curiosity and questions and taking a measure of what the remainder of the semester may look like for them. For instructors, it is an opportunity to build excitement for the content to come and invite learners to be active participants in their learning. In this workshop, we’ll explore ways in which you can hold a first day of class that goes beyond reading a syllabus or holding icebreakers. You will walk away with concrete strategies to try as well as stories from college classrooms to spark new ideas for how you can make the first day of class unique and unforgettable.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Recall first-day class experiences attendees had as students in college and what made them memorable, whether good or bad.
  • Explain the importance of activities for the first day of class which include student input and voice in the course.
  • Examine first day of class case studies in small groups to showcase how content can be part of the first day of class.
