Publishing Literacy Made Easy: A Toolkit for Your Curriculum Online
Facilitators: Emmett Booth and Lauren Earl
Scholarly publishing is an integral part of a health sciences career path, from setting students up for a career in research to building a career in academia. However, it can be difficult to devote instructional time to explain the nuances and challenges of the publishing world to students. Through this workshop, we aim to provide faculty with an accessible toolkit to build awareness of the publishing process. We will provide an overview of how to discern credible journals, select the right journal for your manuscript, and understand Jefferson’s Open Access publishing agreements. This workshop will also review various assignment types and give suggestions on easy-to-integrate tweaks to familiarize students with various aspects of the publication world.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Provide an overview of important facets of the publishing process, including journal evaluation, predatory publishing, and Open Access
2. Identify opportunities to model facets of the publishing process for students
3. Select publishing literacy tweaks or strategies to integrate into your assignments or teaching practice
