Simulation Basics: Foundations for Health Professions Educators Online

Instructor: Missy Halligan, DNP

Simulation is a powerful tool in health professions education—but how do we use it effectively and intentionally? In this interactive session, we’ll explore the foundational elements of simulation-based education, including the different types of simulation modalities and the educational principles that guide their use. Designed for educators at all levels of experience, this session will take an outcomes-driven approach to simulation, with a focus on aligning learning objectives with simulation design and equipment choices. We’ll also introduce core concepts of debriefing, a critical phase for learner reflection and growth.

Whether you’re new to simulation or looking to refine your approach, this session offers a practical and engaging overview, with time built in for faculty questions and discussion.

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify opportunities within a curriculum to engage simulation-based learning

  1. Define simulation-based learning and the modalities associated to create experiential learning opportunities

  1. Develop one learning objective that can be matched with an appropriate simulation based learning modality
