Exploring Active Learning: Think-Pair-Share and a Flipped Classroom Paired with Case Based Learning Online

Instructor: Ruth Jeminiwa, PhD

Traditional lecture-based instruction often falls short in fostering deep learning, student engagement, and practical skill development. In response, a Pharmacoeconomics course was redesigned to integrate active learning strategies that promote collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world application.

This session presents a case study of the course transformation, focusing on the implementation of two key strategies: Think-Pair-Share and a Flipped Classroom model combined with Case-Based Learning (CBL). Attendees will explore how these approaches were applied, the rationale behind their selection, and their impact on student learning outcomes and engagement. The session will also highlight lessons learned, including practical considerations for adapting active learning in content-heavy courses.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the core principles of Think-Pair-Share and the Flipped Classroom paired with Case-Based Learning and how they can be implemented in their own teaching contexts.

  1. Apply the lessons learned from the case study to inform their own pedagogical choices and design more engaging and effective learning experiences for their students.

  1. Evaluate the benefits and challenges of Think-Pair-Share and Flipped Classroom paired with Case-Based Learning
