Social Media Meets Active Learning: A Jigsaw Activity for the Modern Classroom Online

Instructor: Ruth Jeminiwa, PhD

Traditional lectures, while common, are increasingly shown to be less effective than active learning strategies—and may even contribute to higher assessment failure rates. This session introduces the Jigsaw method, an evidence-based active learning strategy that transforms passive classrooms into dynamic, student-centered environments.

The Jigsaw approach fosters deeper engagement by assigning each student a key role in collaborative learning. Through structured peer teaching, students become both learners and instructors, reinforcing their understanding while promoting individual accountability and group cohesion. Participants will explore the pedagogical principles behind the method, review examples of its successful implementation, and engage in a brief Jigsaw activity to experience its benefits firsthand. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for incorporating the Jigsaw method into a variety of course formats and disciplines.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Design and implement a modified jigsaw activity incorporating social media reels to enhance student engagement.

  1. Describe the benefits of the jigsaw activity as an active learning strategy for improving learning outcomes.

  1. Collect and analyze data for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) related to the modified jigsaw activity, contributing to evidence-based teaching practices.
