Enhancing Microaggression Intervention Implementation through Simulation- Based Learning Online

Instructors: Alyssa Yeager, MD, Amber King, PharmD, Jennifer Lacy, DNP, Xiao Chi Zhang, MD

Microaggressions are subtle, discriminatory statements or actions that communicate hostile or negative slights against a particular group of people. Microaggressions negatively impact students’ self-esteem and academic performance, as well as impede effective interprofessional collaboration.  Current microaggression intervention curricula primarily rely on unprofessional, didactic approaches. However, evidence suggests that simulation-based learning results in improved knowledge retention and skill application. Integrating microaggression intervention strategies into interprofessional simulation-based programs may enhance students’ ability to implement these practices in learning environments, leading to improved future collaborative teamwork.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the use of simulation as a pedagogical method to teach microaggression identification and intervention.

  1. Apply empathy-focused intervention techniques from the Microaggression Triangle Model in a simulated environment.

  1. Reflect on strategies to incorporate microaggression training in simulated scenarios within their own learning environment.
