Foundations of Effective Mentorship: Fall 2025 Faculty Book Club Online

Instructors: Dimitrios Papanagnou, MD, MPH, and Kati Fosselius, MS

Mentorship is a cornerstone of faculty success — supporting professional growth, career advancement, and a sense of belonging in academic communities. In an effort to create intentional space for conversation and reflection on mentoring, we invite you to join our Fall faculty book club dedicated to this essential topic. This series complements ongoing mentorship initiatives supported by our Office for Faculty Development.

We’ll be reading The Mentor’s Companion: A Guide to Good Mentoring Practice by Rhianon Washington — a practical and research-informed guide that explores the nature of mentoring and the skills that make it effective. Through case studies and reflective prompts, the book examines essential practices such as deep listening, empathy, emotional intelligence, and powerful questioning. Whether you’re new to mentoring or have years of experience, this is an opportunity to deepen your practice alongside your colleagues at Jefferson.

The book is available electronically through the Scott Memorial Library.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the foundational principles and functions of effective mentoring.

  1. Discuss essential skills for mentoring, including empathy, deep listening, emotional intelligence, and powerful questioning.

  1. Apply strategies and frameworks from the book to address real-world mentoring challenges in academic environments.

  1. Reflect on their personal approach to mentoring and identify areas for growth and development.
